Transferring Your Solar System

If you're a solar customer and you're planning to move, there are some important considerations, especially when it comes to your solar system.

Here's what you need to know:

Warranty and Contact Transfers:

Before you move, make sure to notify Better Earth and your financier at least 30-60 days before selling your home.

The new homeowner can get in touch with our Customer Success team to inform us about the home sale. Our team will update the contact information in our database and transfer the warranties to the new homeowner. The new homeowner will receive a 5-year system warranty from Better Earth.

If you have just purchased a home with a Better Earth solar system, please contact our Customer Success team to transfer any warranties over to you. You can also refer to our article: What Do I Do If I Buy a Home with Better Earth Solar Panels?

Moving with Different Finance Types:

Cash Deal:

  • If you have a cash deal, you're in luck. You can typically add the value of your solar system to the selling price of your home. This means the new homeowner won't have an electric bill unless they use more power than the system produces.

  • No action is needed from the seller; it's a seamless process.

Solar Loan:

With a solar loan, you have two options when you move:

  • You can add the value of the system to the selling price of your home and pay off the remainder of the loan balance, similar to how you'd manage a mortgage with an outstanding balance.

  • Alternatively, you can transfer the remaining loan balance to the new homeowner, provided they agree to this arrangement.

    • The finance company will verify the creditworthiness of the new buyer before transferring the agreement to them.

    • The credit requirements are relatively straightforward. If the new homeowner meets the qualifications for purchasing a home, they should also meet the qualifications for the solar financing.

Lease or PPA (Power Purchase Agreement):

  • If you have a lease or PPA, you won't be able to add the system's value to your home since you are not the owner of the system.

  • In this case, you'll need to contact the finance company 30-60 days in advance to inform them of your move.

  • The finance company will verify the creditworthiness of the new buyer before transferring the agreement to them.

    • The credit requirements are relatively straightforward. If the new homeowner meets the qualifications for purchasing a home, they should also meet the qualifications for the solar Lease/PPA.

  • Once approved, the agreement will be transferred to the new homeowner.
