How to restart an Envoy S or IQ Gateway

Simple steps to physically reboot a gateway.

  1. Turn off the gateway’s circuit breaker or unplug the gateway from its power outlet.

  2. Wait 30 seconds.

  3. Turn the circuit breaker back on or plug the gateway back into the power outlet.

Locating the gateway circuit breaker

  • For standalone gateways (IQ Gateway and Envoy S), the circuit breaker can be found in the main panel or subpanel.

  • If you are using an IQ Combiner, the IQ Gateway circuit breaker is located inside the IQ Combiner box.

  • For systems with IQ Battery 3T/10T, the IQ Gateway circuit breaker is located within the IQ System Controller 2.

Detailed steps to physically reboot a gateway.

To restart or reboot the Gateway, turn off the Envoy breaker or unplug it from the power outlet (depending on your Gateway model). Wait 30 seconds before powering it back on.

Please follow the link to find the Gateway or look below to confirm:

The Enphase Gateway is a communications gateway that collects information about how your system is performing and transmits that information over the Internet to MyEnphase. There are several different versions of the Gateway as pictured below:

Your Gateway may be tucked away in a utility room. Or your Gateway may be found in your garage or outside in a water-tight enclosure near your electrical circuit breaker panel or near an electrical sub-panel for your array.

Your Gateway may be in a water-tight enclosure

Watertight enclosures can take a variety of forms, but some of the most commonly used are much like the Enphase AC Combiner Box pictured below. If you open the enclosure, you’ll find the Gateway inside.

Here's what the water-tight enclosure looks like when it's closed:

When it's open, you will see the Gateway inside:

Once you’ve successfully found your gateway then the next step is to select your connection type to learn how to reconnect your gateway. For IQ Gateway, Envoy S Metered, Envoy S Standard, and IQ Combiner you will have the following options:

Connection types could be:

  • Wifi

  • Ethernet

  • Cellular

If you don't know your gateway connection type, you can find it from the Enphase app by following the steps below

1. Select the Menu tab from the app Overview pane

If you change your internet service provider, Wi-Fi network password, or Wi-Fi network name, your gateway disconnects from your Wi-Fi internet network.

To reconnect the gateway to your Wi-Fi network, follow the steps in this guide.

Note:

Ensure the following before beginning the reconnection process:

  • You are at the system installation site and near your gateway

  • Your home has an active internet connection

  • You have the latest version of the Enphase App

  • You are logged in as the system owner to reconnect using the Enphase App

  1. Open the Enphase App and go to Menu > Settings > Connectivity, then tap Configure Wi-Fi.

2. Tap the Connect button, then tap Join in the prompt that appears. This connects your phone to the gateway.

Note:

If you are unable to connect your phone to the gateway:

i. Briefly press and release (do not hold) the AP mode button on the gateway. If you pressed the button for too long, wait for 2 minutes, and then briefly press it. The second LED should light up solid green to indicate that the gateway is in AP mode.

Note:

  • The first LED on the gateway may show red while it reconnects and confirms its connection to the internet. It should turn green once the connection is successful.

  • If your system was offline for a while, you will see a Data Uploading notification in the Enphase App. You will be able to view up-to-date energy data once this notification closes.

Please follow the steps below to reconnect your Gateway via Ethernet:

Reconnecting your Envoy-S or IQ Gateway using an Ethernet connection

Determine what type of Ethernet connection your Gateway has

Did you know your Gateway can work by connecting to your home Wi-Fi network? Click here to learn how to connect your Gateway to your home Wi-Fi.

The Gateway can be connected to the Ethernet in one of two ways. Select which one applies to your Gateway from the options below:

My Gateway is connected via Ethernet bridges:

Ethernet bridges are used when your Gateway is located too far from your home's internet router to connect to it directly. If your Gateway is connected via Ethernet bridges, you will see one Ethernet bridge connected to your router, and a second Ethernet bridge plugged in near your Gateway, as shown in the images below:

My Gateway is connected via Ethernet cable:

If your Gateway is connected via Ethernet cable, you will see an Ethernet cable connected directly from your Gateway to your home's internet router, as shown in the images below:

Please follow the steps below to reconnect your Gateway via Cellular:

Reconnecting your Envoy-S or IQ Gateway using a cellular connection

Now that we've determined that your Gateway is connected to the Internet via a cellular connection, let's walk through the steps to reset your Multi-Tech cellular modem and reconnect your Gateway to Enphase app. A complete installation guide for your cellular modem can be found here.

Follow these steps to get your Gateway back online:

  1. Locate your Multi-Tech cellular modem.

Your Multi-Tech cellular modem may be a standalone unit inside your home, but it is more likely mounted inside an enclosure like the Enphase AC Combiner box, along with your Gateway. Need help finding your Gateway?

  2. Unplug the USB cable from the cell modem.
If your cellular modem is connected with a Y-cable, disconnect both USB connectors. (It does not matter which connector goes into which USB port.)

  3. Power the Gateway off and then on by unplugging and re-plugging the power cord. If your Gateway does not have a power cord, you can power the Gateway off and on by flipping the Gateway's circuit breaker open and then closing again.

  4. Confirm that the modem antenna is orientated vertically.

  5. Reconnect the USB cable to the Gateway. This will power up the modem and cause it to join the (AT&T) cellular network.

Check if the connection was successful

Does the top LED on your Gateway, next to the cloud icon, light up solid green, like the image below?

Click here to know what each of the LED lights means on the Gateway.

If the top LED lights up solid green: Congratulations! You're back online. Your system now needs to re-sync, which can take anywhere from an hour to a few days depending on how long your system was offline. Continue on to the final step: what to expect when your Gateway is reconnected to the Internet?

Why don't I see my production data even after my Gateway has been reconnected to the internet?

Don't worry if you don't see your production data or the top light of the Gateway is red, even after reconnecting your Gateway back to the internet. It takes some time for the backed-up data to sync up with Enphase App. Typically it takes about 1 hour for each day of your Gateway being offline. For example, if your Gateway was offline for 30 days your system should fully sync up in about 30 hours.
