I Have a Roof Leak After Solar Installation — What Should I Do?

Updated over 2 weeks ago

First Things First

We understand how stressful a roof leak can be. If you're experiencing a leak, here's what to do right away:

  1. Contain the water: Place buckets or towels under the leak to prevent further damage to your home

  2. Take photos: Document the leak — ceiling stains, wet walls, dripping water, and any visible damage

  3. Note the details: When did you first notice it? Where exactly is it? How severe is it (dripping, steady stream, or pooling)?

Report the Leak to Better Earth

Contact us as soon as possible:

For active roof leaks, we aim to respond within 24-48 hours.

What We'll Need From You

To process your service request as quickly as possible, please have the following ready:

  • When did you first notice the leak?

  • Where is the leak? (Which room, which part of the ceiling or wall)

  • How severe is it? (Dripping, steady stream, or pooling water)

  • Is there visible damage? (Ceiling stains, bubbling paint, wet drywall, damaged flooring)

  • Has anyone been on your roof since solar was installed? (Roofer, cable company, etc.)

  • Have you had a previous roof leak service ticket with us?

Better Earth's Roof Penetration Warranty

Better Earth provides a 10-Year Roof Penetration Warranty on all installations. This covers any roof leaks caused by the holes made during your solar panel installation.

Here's what that means:

  • If the leak is caused by our installation, we repair it at no cost to you

  • Our warranty covers the specific areas where solar equipment was mounted to your roof

  • The warranty is valid for 10 years from your installation date

What to Expect After You Report

  1. Service ticket created: You'll receive a case number for tracking

  2. Assessment scheduled: We'll schedule a technician visit to inspect the leak

  3. Inspection: Our tech will assess the leak, determine the cause, and document the findings

  4. Repair: If the leak is related to our solar installation, we repair it under warranty at no charge

Important: Please Don't Do This

  • Don't have another contractor work on the area where solar panels are mounted. This could void your warranty coverage. Let Better Earth handle the assessment and repair.

  • Don't remove or adjust your solar panels yourself. This is dangerous and could cause further damage.

What About the Truck Roll Fee?

If our technician inspects the leak and determines it is not related to the solar installation (for example, if the leak is in an area where no solar work was done, or if damage was caused by a different contractor), a $500 diagnostic fee may apply. Our tech will discuss this with you during the visit.

Planning a Reroof?

If your roof is older and you're planning a full roof replacement, we can help with that too. Better Earth offers solar panel removal and reinstallation services for reroofing projects. See our article: Understanding Panel Removal and Reinstallation with Better Earth
